The New Shows:
Commander-In-Chief is a drama about the first female President of the United States. It stars Geena Davis and Donald Sutherland. Tuesdays at 9 p.m.
Hot Properties is a half-hour comedy about four women who work for a NYC real estate firm. Think Designing Women meets Desperate Housewives. Its stars Gail O'Grady and Nicole Sullivan. Fridays at 9:30 p.m.
Freddie stars Freddie Prinze, Jr. as a rich, goodlooking, young, single chef looking for more meaning in his life. More than, you know, being rich, goodlooking, and young. Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m.
Invasion sounds cool. It's about aliens using natural disasters as a cover to a more sinister plan to take over the Earth. I am so there for this one. Stars William Fichtner and Eddie Cibrian. Wednesdays at 10 p.m.
The Night Stalker sounds half promising/half "oh no they're destroying one of my childhood memories." The old one was about a newspaper reporter who battled monsters and no one believed him. The new one is about a reporter who's wife is killed in a weird way and he's the suspect. Along the way he battles monsters with the help of a cute fellow reporter, which is a change from the original lone hero plot - looks like they're making it more X-Files; the show is produced by Frank Spotnitz and Daniel Sackheim, two ex-X-Filers. Stars Stuart Townsend, Gabrielle Union, and Cotter Smith. Thursdays at 9 p.m.
Crumbs comes from the creator of Caroline in the City and is about two warring brothers who go back to their hometown to take care of their mom and run the family business. Stars Fred Savage, Jane Curtin, and William Devane. Starts in January.
Emily's Reasons Why Not stars Heather Graham as a woman who has a "fabulous job in publishing." I've been in publishing for 20 years, and let me tell you, it's usually not that fabulous. Mondays at 9 p.m. starting in January.
The Evidence is one of the shows that probably bumped Eyes off the schedule. It's a police procedural using innovative camera techniques and plot devices to tell the story of a crime that occurred. It's from John Wells, the ER guy, so it will probably have a certain level of quality, but I'm still pissed. Stars Orlando Jones, Martin Landau, and Nicky Katt.
In Justice is about how innocent people are put in prison and how a law firm tries to get them out. Stars Kyle Maclachlan, Jason O'Mara, and Constance Zimmer. Starts in January.
The Miracle Workers is a reality series about a group of medical professionals who use innovative methods to help patients with rare disorders. Starts in January.
Sons and Daughters is a half hour comedy about a family in a small town who is trying its best to get by. (You know, some of these premises sound lame, but as we all know it all depends on the writing and the cast). Stars Fred Goss, Gillian Vigman, Alison Quinn, Jerry Lambert, Max Gail, and Dee Wallace. Starts in January.
What About Brian is an hour long comedy/drama starring Barry Watson, Polly Shannon, Matthew Davis, Rick Gomez, and Amanda Detmer. It's about a thirtysomething guy who finds himself the last single person in his circle of friends. Oh, that hits home. Believe it or not, this is from JJ Abrams, creator/writer/producer of Alias and Lost. But he also did Felicity, so I guess it's not so odd. Mondays at 10 p.m starting in January.

Does ABC want to shoot themselves in the foot with their schedule changes, or are they so high on their ratings this year that they feel they are invincible. Moving the 2nd highest rated show on the network (even if it is only an hour later) and moving Alias to the Thursday death slot can only do harm to the network. Lost just feels out of place with next years lineup. I predict ABC has hit a wall after their scheduling genius of this season.

I think their reasoning is two fold: one, they think that NBC is weak with Joey and with Will and Grace on it's last legs (though Survivor is in that time period), and two they want to get it away from American Idol on Weds.

Unless I'm mistaken or Fox moves American Idol, isn't the Wednesday Idol on at 9:00? Won't Lost be going up against it every week? But I could be wrong; I never see anything live anymore thanks to two dual tuner Tivos.

Yeah, but Lost gets much better ratings than Alias, so they're probably thinking it can do battle with AI.

Well, personally, I also think that they have made some scheduling mistakes. Even if Invasion looks kind of cool, putting comedies, and bad ones at that, before Lost was not the right move. They had a chance to really take over Wednesday the same way they own Sundays now. Picking one more strong show at 8 PM would have done that.
I'm glad they saved Jake in Progress... much better show that most people think.

As a single guy named Brian, I'm not sure if I really want to watch a show about a circle of friends with the last single guy being a Brian.

ABC should have given "Eyes" the spot they gave "The Bachelor" for next season. Or moved "20/20" to Thursdays merged it with "Primetime Live" again, and given "Eyes" either the vacant Friday slot or the show of another show that they'd move to Friday. Terrible scheduling overall in my opinion. Remember, these net execs were not the ones who developed "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" as those old execs were fired right before those shows were announced on the schedule.

Why is being single so wrong? I want to see a show that doesn't question the relationship status, but just explores the fun OF the relationships.
I am sick of married folk on the tube.

I, too am mourning the loss of Eyes. Like Shannon's Deal, Harsh Realm and Firefly before it, Eyes has falen prey to the current small-mindedness of network execs. Why not hedge their bets and order 13 eps. as a mid-season or fall replacement? They KNOW at least one of their hour dramas is going to bite it before Thanksgiving.
Feh.

How can they take Eyes away from me?! If anything was going to lead-in to Lost, Eyes could have done it!

Why the hell do they keep that George Lopez show like Chris said:
"This show only furthers the stereotype that George Lopze is funny"
Take it out and give me Eyes!!!

I'm interested in Night Stalker and Invasion, but little else. Looks like more of the same otherwise. I'll give any decent-sounding science fiction show a shot, though-- and I was always interested in The Night Stalker as an X-Files fan who had heard of its influence on the show but never actually seen the Night Stalker.

I agree with the above comment that Jack in Progress is a good show. It really seemed to get better over the course of the season. Still not a fan of the dentist, too cliched, even though the show in itself is a cliche.
The cancelling of 8 Simple Rules and My Wife and Kids was a shock, not because they are good shows, but they seemed like the type of shows that would always just stay around in the background. Wait, According to Jim was renewed? Now I don't know what ABC's tactics are.

Here's a tough question: should I watch the five episodes of Eyes I recorded? Will it be too painful knowing the show is already cancelled? Is it better to have loved and lost...? :)

Nobody should be really surprised as to why 8 Simple Rules got canned. The show was never the same again once John Ritter passed on.
As for My Wife and Kids, the show's demise was disappointing, but not unexpected. The show had been killing itself with outlandish plots and dumbed-down characters for the past two seasons. Nevertheless, I should say that the series finale was far from a proper send-off. As a fan, I really wish that things had worked better for Damon Wayans and copmany; it hurts to see TV shows killed off like this.

Hmm.. can't say I understand the move of Lost and Alias either. Assuming they'd kept Eyes and had the same current schedule it was a really solid night of tv in the same action/drama genre. Considering their new shift in timing to break TiVo and keep viewers on the same channel for one solid block they're not really sticking with this idea in their scheduling.
As to the comment that ABC owns Sundays currently I guess there's something to say about that. I know that I personally haven't even bothered to look at Desperate Housewives. It never really looked that good to me at first and didn't sound much better, but putting it up against Arrested Development meant that there was no way on Earth I was going to watch it. Sundays have been owned by Fox (the only night I watch them and one of the two nights when I really even watch network TV) since... well, just about forever. At least since the Simpsons and X-Files gave them a solid lock on it.
