Time magazine has an exclusive interview with the comedian. To summarize:
- Dave Chappelle is staying at a friend's house in South Africa, not a mental facility.
- He is not on drugs.
- He was overwhelmed by the new contract and responsibility at Comedy Central.
- He doesn't blame Comedy Central but blames his own doubts and his inner circle who gave him bad advice and started to act differently.
- He will get back to the show as soon as he can work things out.
Now, can we leave the poor guy alone and let him figure things out?

I hope he can pull it together, he's one of the few highlights left on the tele.

I didn't read it that he was overwhelmed by the responsibility, but rather that he felt he couldn't trust his inner circle to give him good advice and material because of the new-found fame.
Agreed about giving him some damn space, though.

If what is being said is true, than god. It was obvious the attention got the better of Dave (as explained perfectly by Howard Stern on a recent show), and all he needed to do was relax.
It did seem wierd that he would go to South Africa for mental treatment, as nothing against the country, but I would think there are much better facilities in other places. Considering the show is fairly lax, if all goes well we should see him back soon.
Think this will increase show viewership?

Yes, people (especially analysts) will tune is to see if he's "different" or if he will have a breakdown or something on tv(completely disregarding the fact its taped before hand and Comedy central wouldn't show it).

Great read. The man is trying to keep himself balanced. That's very cool, very responsible, and very wise. My prayers, while of another conceptual realm of spirituality, go out to him.

Like ooda said, Howard Stern hit the nail on the head. Sometimes it's not easy to be a comedian that hits it big. Being a stand up takes a different kind of person, and being famous isn't expected for 99% of them, so it can be a shock. I love Dave and hopefully he'll get his stuff together and be back better than ever.

if anyone knows a way to contact Dave Chappelle personally that would help me out tons. you don't have to post it here just email it to me at shoregid@yahoo.com
I have tons of material I think Dave would find hillarious. Of course, his premium stuff beats mine, but his middle/normal stuff I could accentuate and make it to his premium stuff level.
any kind of direction to connect with him would help me tons as well.
peace
