Tonight we got another look into the secret life of Kate, while on the island we see the boat building has gone into full swing and is almost complete. After seeing this episode, I've come to the conclusion that my favorite character on the show is Sayid. This guy has seen some crazy stuff in his lifetime, knows a thing or two about getting information out of people, has a relatively level head, and most likely has the most common sense of anyone on the island. He's the first person to point out the most obvious thing about the mysterious hatch: since it doesn't have a handle, maybe that's a big sign saying it shouldn't be opened from that end?
For those following the numbers game J.J. Abrams and friends seem to play with us in this show, did you catch the date of the cassette recording Kate and her girlhood friend Tom made? August 15. 815.
Two other revelations this episode: We meet possibly a new cast member, science teacher Art, and learn who the owner is of the toy plane Kate carries. But now the question is, how did Kate actually get that plane after leaving it in the back seat of the car?
Quote of the episode: "Alright, check this out. This is track two. It's called, 'Monster Eats The Pilot.'"

I'm just on autopilot with Lost now. How in hell does the kid know about the hatch? It hurts to speculate, so I'll just keep tuning in, and taking what Lord Abrams dishes out.

To the last commenter, you gotta remember back to when anything that the kid was reading in his comic book basically appeared in real life. See: polar bear. He's obviously got some connection to the island or is able to make things happen, perhaps not directly, though.
Good question about the plane, as we know she got it out of the safe deposit box when she hit the bank way back when. So how'd it get there in the first place?

I was wondering that about the plane too. I wonder if there's a story behind it or just a continuity boo-boo?

Of course there was a story behind it - our buddy J.J. is way to meticulous to leave a coninuity boo-boo like that. Particularly where a whole episode/flashback revolved around getting the plance from the security deposit box, and this episode was very careful to provide a nice long shot of the plane in the back seat, and a clear tracking shot of Kate leaving the car without reaching into the back seat. So we've definately got another Kate backstory coming (not to mention at least one touching on why she was on the run back then, in the first place).

Well the toy plane was in the car during a criminal act so it would have been collected and stored for safe keeping until a next of kin or the evidence is not needed.
I agree with the best quote except the pilot was chewed on not eaten, he was almost immeaditly spit out.
Also, going by the theory that there is no original story lines I swear I can almost remember a Tales from the Darkside or Amazing Stories story just like this, I know I've seen this and I don't just mean the end of Deep Rising.

As to the plane, it's quite simple. Not everything is shown on-camera on this show. The setup is Kate in the car, the authorities coming, she looks behind her and sees the cop cars, then the airplane. The next shot you see is of her running away; is it outside the realm of possibility that she simple grabbed the plane and then left? I don't think so.
Walt's wiggy powers are being revealed quite slowly. This is the first time we've seen him say or do something weird simply because someone touched him, akin to the "Dead Zone" effect. Interesting.
I'm also quite interested to learn just what in the hell Kate did to her mother; we still don't know what she did to get her on the lam in the first place, but at least we know her real name: Katherine Austin.
There is a strong biblical connection here, specifically Noah and the Ark. Supposedly, the first season chronicles the first 40 days of the passengers' life on the island; that, combined with the fact that the last three episodes are parts 1, 2 and 3 of one episode called "Exodus", and you have some intriguing concepts/theories. I can't wait to see where they go with this, I need to know where the freakin' Dinobot is, and I need to know who the "Others" are - where did Ethan Rom/Other Man come from?
Man, there's no way this show should be this good.

How many episodes are left? 2? Man, they have a lot of stuff to wrap up this season--or a lot of cliffhangers to set up for next season.

I was suprised at the end when Kate ended up being involved in the poisoning. I always thought that hers was a character that was on the island to be redemed. The good vs evil theme played out over her relationships with Jack and Sawyer. Her turning down Sawyer's advances once and for all I thought was key, but then the scene with Jin threw me for a loop.
Oh, and while we're talking about Sawyer and Kate... That scene? "There's nothing worth staying for here..." So much communicated with so few words. Bravo to Lilly and Holloway, and Javier Grillo-Marxuach.

I was at the drug store on Sunday and picked up the EW for this week and they talked to JJ about the season finale and said that you get to see 2-5% of the monster, the hatch story gets elaborated on, you find out about the numbers, and a couple of other tidbits. It was really neat. I wish I would have gotten it when I had the chance, now I can't find it. Anybody else read that article and can clarify/ elaborate?
