The Discovery Channel is searching for the Greatest American. And from their list of nominees, it's going to be the most fun contest ever: Tom Cruise, Ellen DeGeneres, Clint Eastwood, Bill Cosby, Brett Favre, Michael Jackson, Donald Trump, and Dr. Phil are right up there with Harry Truman, Jonas Salk, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Martin Luther King, and Albert Einstein. At first I thought it was the greatest American in various categories (politics, medicine, science, entertainment, etc), but no, it's the greatest American, period. The nominees were picked by AOL voters, and a seven hour show on the Discovery Channel will profile the nominees, leading up to the Greatest American Of All-Time. There's even a blog, of course.

A bunch of other countries have already done that. I think it started in England.
Here is the site for the Canadian version:

I only saw a few of the shows. I thought they were ok, but they had some really cheezy fake theater parts. I bet the USA version will be better produced though.
