ER has a bad history of not knowing how to get rid of characters. Some just slink away in a really unsatisfying manner (Jeanie Boulet, Dr. Benton). Some are killed off for no real reason (Dr. Greene). And some have a helicopter chop their arm off one day, and still another helicopter fall on top of them from the sky several months later (Dr. Romano). Now Dr. Carter is leaving [spoiler alert at the link]... next year to go to Paris and reconcile with Kem. He'll be back for a few episodes the following season, probably when ER's ratings are in the dumper and they need a shot of adrenlin from a veteran fan favorite. But for the most part he's gone for good this May. Good luck Dr. Carter. Hope you have a good life. Just stay away from those falling helicopters. Noah Wyle leaving ER

I love ER. I wasn't really a big fan until the later years of the show, but I love it! Now I am catching myself up on all the old episodes and am watching the new ones. The new ER's just aren't the same since so many people have left. I think it is real sad that Noah Wyle left. He was just such a great character, not to mention so hot!!!! Too bad he is like 35 and kinda famous. lol. Anyway, I really miss him on all these episodes. I just keep on waiting for him to pop up and start talking to like Abby or someone. I always wanted Carter and Abby to get together on the show. I always thought their characters went perfect together but Abby's bipolar crazy family had to mess it up...gawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Other characters just kinda started to fade away. Like Boulet and Benten...? What happened to 'em? Who knows? i thinkit would be really really kewl to go to Chicago and watch the actors film an episode. And if you got to meet all the stars and everything. Goodness! Whata dream...I don't know what else to say but Noah Wyle you are truly deeply missed by ME on ER! :(

Carter leaving will not be that big a deal, since his character seemed to "leave" the show a while ago. I can't pinpoint the exact episode, but I think it was when the storyline between him and Abby ended that I lost interest in Carter. I used to enjoy his interaction with his grandmother, his father and mother, the various love interests he has had, and his genuine love of his profession. But the past two seasons he has been detached. I wish, tho, that the producers would get rid of Morris! Ray looks to be a good replacement for Carter-like storylines. I miss Greene and Benton though! It would be fun to hear someone mention how some of the former characters are doing, such as Carol and the babies, or Benton. With a show that is such a big hit and on for so long, the characters become American folklore.

I've been an ER fan for a long time. I've watched many characters come and go and felt sad when they did (except for Drs. Benton and Romano). I've particularly liked Wyle's Dr. Carter character. It was like a reverse switch-a-roo. Yes he's rich, but he was an underdog. He had to prove his self over and over again. But he had a caring heart. His many love affairs over the years were interesting to watch also. However, it was different with Newton's character of Kem. If ever two people (soap characters) were meant to be, it was John and Kem. The episode where they delivered a stillborn son was heartbreaking, but it showed the love Carter had for her. He didn't stay with her because she became pregnant, but he truly loved her. That's what I'll miss when the new season starts. I hope that if they bring the characters back for visits, they will be a happy MR. AND MRS., because writers tend to want everyone to end up SEPARATED!
